Breast Augmentation is one of the most commonly
performed and most coveted cosmetic operations. Primarily, women
desire the results of this surgery due to the commonly perceived
definition of ideal beauty. Full breasts have been used as the
distinction between man and woman – an indication of womanhood.
Therefore, the more shapely the breasts, the more "womanly"
she becomes.
Therefore, the size and shape of the breasts have
become extremely important to a woman in her perception of her
body and in her concept of self. This surgery provides positive
psychological benefits to women who suffer from poor body image
because of breast hypoplasia (small breasts) or of mild breast
ptosis (mildly sagging breasts).
Who are candidates for breast surgery?
Anyone in healthy condition. Minors require parental
consent and are advised to wait until they reach 16 years of age
– when growth spurts cease and breasts are usually formed
already.
What kinds of implants are used?
There are 2 types of implant materials used for
breast augmentation: cohesive silicone gel prosthesis and the
saline filled implant. The Belo Medical Group provides natural-looking
implants to complement the total look, giving you a new body and
improved confidence. We make use of the cohesive silicone gel
prothesis. It is completely safe.
What is the procedure like?
This cosmetic operation can be handled as an outpatient
procedure. Although the actual operation takes an hour and a half,
we advice patients to allot a total of 4 – 5 hours from
the preparation stage for surgery until the recovery period.
Where are incisions made?
Incisions can be made in 3 different areas:
1. Infra-mammary (beneath the breast): This is
the most recommended type of incision as it provides faster
healing and the insertion of the implant results to minimal
scarring.
2. Peri-arealar (half circle of the areola)
3. Axillary (near the armpit)
What should I expect post-operatively?
The patient is prescribed by the surgeon to wear
a support bandage for a week. A follow-up session will be performed
to remove stitches about 5-7 days after surgery. No active stretching
of the arms is allowed for about a week. Some swelling and bruising
will be experienced for 1 to 2 weeks. Final results should be
seen around the 3rd week. Patient is taught how to massage the
area starting on the 2nd week after surgery. Moreover, the patient
is not allowed to wear a brassiere for 1 month after the procedure
is done.
What other breast-related surgeries can be performed?
On the other end of the spectrum, breast reduction
and/or breast lift (mastopexy) may be performed on patients who
are greatly endowed. Whether it be sagging breasts due to aging
or being overweight, sometimes bigger is not always better. Large
or sagging breasts while being visibly unattractive can also pose
some health related problems such as severe discomfort and back
pains. Areolar and nipple repair can also be performed.
