360° Liposuction: What You Need to Know | Belo Medical Group

Here’s What You Need to Know About 360° Liposuction

By Ysabel Vitangcol on January 22, 2018

360° Liposuction is one of the most misunderstood cosmetic procedures, because many people believe that it causes a lot of bleeding and swelling. However, few people understand that it is not as traumatizing as we’re led to believe! Read on as we explain everything you need to know about 360 Degrees Liposuction procedure and debunk its many medical myths.

THE TRUTH: There are different kinds of Liposuction procedures.

In a traditional liposuction procedure, fat is sucked out from under the skin via physical manipulation and a thin tube called a cannula. With Laser Liposuction, it’s actually a more preferred solution since your surgeon will start by softening or liquefying the fat first using laser heat. Not only does this step make the fat removal process easier, but you’ll also be less prone to bruising, too.

THE MYTH: Liposuction is only for those on the heavy side.

If you can’t lose your tummy or arm flab no matter how much you workout, lipo can be a great way to sculpt your figure and get rid of your problem areas. Dr. Joey Muñoz, associate physician at the Belo Medical Group, says that the procedure is done on stubborn areas—like the abdomen, upper arms, thighs, and buttocks—where it’s harder to lose fat. “The ideal candidate is someone with minimal to moderate fat, and has the discipline to work out and eat right,” says Dr. Muñoz.

THE TRUTH: You actually lose inches.

Lipo trims inches off your problem areas. This means that you won’t lose weight as drastically, but since liposuction improves your body shape, you can look forward to having a more sculpted figure. Significant changes can be seen after 3 to 6 months, so it’s best if you stick to a healthy diet and a doctor-approved workout post-op for the best results.

THE MYTH: Liposuction gives you a license to binge-eat, right?

Nope! Liposuction improves how you look, because it smoothens and tightens loose skin, which could be due to aging or childbirth. Without a strict diet and a regular exercise routine, patients who undergo liposuction often find themselves gaining unnecessary fat in some areas, because their cells expand due to weight gain.

THE TRUTH: Swelling is usually minimal and the downtime isn’t so bad.

People think that liposuction is very painful, but it’s a tolerable procedure. According to Dr. Munoz, they’re able to limit the swelling because they use a smaller fiberoptic tip that’s inserted in a very thin cannula to make the procedure less traumatic compared to other surgical clinics. This also makes the recovery time faster. “Many patients are up and about the following day. Some resume working after 2-3 days,” adds Dr. Muñoz. “In fact, we encourage our patients to go back to their regular activities as soon as they can.”

THE MYTH: Doctors who perform liposuction will produce the same results.

A lot of surgical clinics perform lipo, but the results vary. At the Belo Medical Group, doctors are trained to assess their patient’s body thoroughly before recommending any treatment. Because of this, each patient’s assessment is different, making the treatment personal and customizable depending on their needs, goals, and lifestyles.

THE TRUTH: You need a “clean bill of health” before you’re approved for lipo.

According to Dr. Munoz, some patients worry that they might not wake up after the procedure due to surgical complications, but this is untrue. “Lipo candidates are required to undergo blood, X-ray, and Electrocardiography (ECG) tests to monitor heart rate. These are overseen by a cardiologist or an internist, who then give us a go signal to perform the procedure,” says Dr. Muñoz. “If the patient is not medically cleared, we do not go through with liposuction.”
